Christmas markets on your own?

Fairy lights strung across narrow lanes, the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds, a choir singing „Silent Night“ somewhere nearby: Advent in Switzerland is wonderfully atmospheric. And yet many women know the feeling of standing alone at a high table among couples and groups of friends. Here are the loveliest markets – and a few thoughts on turning Advent into something to remember.

Zurich: from the main station to Sechseläutenplatz

The Christkindlimarkt inside Zurich main station is one of the largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe – perfect when the weather turns. For something cosier, head to the Wienachtsdorf on Sechseläutenplatz, with wooden huts, fondue and a view of the Opera House. And on Werdmühleplatz, children’s choirs sing from the „Singing Christmas Tree“ – a moment that charms even the busiest city dweller.

Basel: between the Minster and Barfüsserplatz

For many, Basel is Switzerland’s Christmas city. The markets on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz are just a short walk apart, with the illuminated old town in between. Do try the famous Basler Leckerli – and treat yourself to the view over the Rhine from the Minster hill afterwards.

Lucerne: Advent in the old town

In Lucerne, an evening stroll through the lit-up old town is a treat – past the Christmas market on Franziskanerplatz and down to the Chapel Bridge. If you like, combine it with an Advent concert; the city’s churches often host atmospheric evenings during these weeks.

You’ll find exact opening times on each market’s website; most open from late November.

A few tips for your visit

  • Go on a weekday. Early weekday evenings are calmer, and conversations start more easily.
  • Combine it with something. A concert, a dinner, a museum visit – and a quick stroll becomes a whole evening.
  • Dress warmly. It sounds obvious, but good shoes and gloves decide whether you leave after half an hour or truly enjoy the evening.

Warmer together

A Christmas market is all about sharing: two mugs of mulled wine, a raclette bread to split, marvelling together at the prettiest stall. If you’re missing someone for evenings like these, der Freizeitmann is happy to join you – purely social, warm-hearted and with a love of small discoveries, in English or German. Not an escort, not a dating service, simply good company for an atmospheric evening.

Some things are simply better in good company.
